On October 26, 1998, police in Abington, MA stopped Michael Hyde for driving with a broken license plate light and what they considered an excessively loud muffler. Upon being pulled over, Hyde used a hand-held audio tape recorder to capture his entire exchange with the officers, without their knowledge. Hyde, a musician, felt he was being harassed by the police officers, and that they targeted him because of his long hair and flashy sports car. They detained him well in excess of the time it would have taken to give him a citation, asking him if he had cocaine in his car, searching through a shopping bag in his back seat (filled only with CDs), threatening to take him to jail, and using foul language toward him.

After their searches failed to turn up any drugs, they let him go, but Hyde knew his rights had been violated. He filed a complaint against the officers, and produced the audio tape as evidence of what transpired during his encounter with them. Rather than reprimand the officers, the police instead chose to bury the harassment complaint and have Hyde charged with a criminal violation of the state's electronic surveillance laws!

Our country is wrought with instances of professional misconduct. I can hardly turn on the television without seeing something about this surgeon doing back-alley boob jobs, that accountant who was a little too "creative" with the company's books, or another police officer who beat up kids for skateboarding. What I almost never see, surprisingly enough, is reporting on those whom society often brands as the most ethically devoid -- the lawyers.

Miami Edison Attack: Not Gone, But Almost Forgotten

It has been roughly one week since the violence and protest at Miami's Edison High School -- the media has all but forgotten what transpired there, and even the community's outcries have softened. Surely, last week's events still burn in the memories of the student who was attacked by Assistant Principal Perez, the approximately 25 students who were attacked by police, and certainly in the thoughts of the 19 students who were arrested. Granted, 18 of those 19 students were released from juvenile detention following the community's protest last Monday morning, but even that gesture is one short, and barely scratches the surface of the rallying students' long (but not wholly unreasonable) list of demands.
