Fla. Prop. 1 Removal Of Anti-Asian Law Fails

An amendment that would have repealed an anachronistic provision in the state constitution that would allow the Legislature to ban Asians from owning property has failed.
With 50 percent of the expected vote counted, the amendment had 47.8 percent support Tuesday night. It needed 60 percent to pass.
Amendment 1 would've repealed a 1926 amendment that permits the Legislature to ban "aliens ineligible for citizenship" from buying and owning real estate. That's an old code for Asian immigrants.
Although the provision was never enforced and was invalidated by subsequent federal court rulings, Amendment 1 backers believe the words should still be removed from the constitution.
A few state lawmakers oppose the measure, believing the old law could be used to prevent foreign terrorist groups from buying real estate here.
